So I started a blog...

Why did I start this blog?

Well, I am going on this road trip, was supposed to already be on this road trip to climb around California, Nevada, and Utah. But, there have been problems...

Something has been keeping me in Santa Cruz even though I have quit my job and moved out of my house! That something being a certain van (actually retired ambulance 91' Ford e350) that runs on veggie oil and I bought to travel in because I could live out of it and travel for cheap on veggie oil.

But...

The van has had problem after problem after problem... I might get into more specifics later but it has been two weeks since I was supposed to leave and its still not fixed right.

So I got to thinking, feeling a bit depressed about the whole situation and trying to see the positive side of things. At least its not raining I keep saying.

But something positive has come of it, potentially extremely positive. I have entered a photo contest where you come up with your dream photography assignment, people vote for it, and the winner gets $50,000 to make their dream come true. Had I not stuck around Santa Cruz I probably wouldn't have found out about it and entered.

So I need everyone's help to win this thing. If you feel so inclined let everyone you know that you think might vote. Here is the short of my dream assignment and you can vote for it at the link below.

To photograph the high mountain people of the world, the ways in which they have adapted to living at high altitude, their culture, daily life, and to document the ways of life that are vanishing in the high mountains.

Anyhow, I plan to use this blog to document my travels, hopefully my van will get fixed someday, and I'll put some pictures of it up soon so you can see how rad it is.

  1. Lucas!

Sorry to hear about the van troubles. That things sounds like a beast. I can't wait to see it sometime. Keep on jumping those barricades to make the trip happen...you know it's gonna be great!

Sweet dream assignment. I'm voting for you, but you've got to promise to bring me along as your assistant (yea!)! Stop by Tahoe on your way out of California for some ski-in basalt sport climbing (Big Chief - check it out)!

  2. sometimes seemingly bad things happen for good reason. Our van recently broke down at a place that we originally thought to be horrible timing. In the end however we found a great mechanic who not only fixed it that day, but he didn't try to rape us with overpricing it either! Good luck with your dream! And don't forget that just because you live in a van, it doesn't mean you can't eat feasts fit for the best. I suggest investing in a good spice and herb collection.
